In a rare wildlife encounter a giant octopus was seen battling a harbor seal at the Ogden Point breakwater in Victoria, Canada. The whole battle was witnessed by several families vacationing at the Ogden point.

The incredible sighting was captured by photographer Bob Ianson who was with his family at the time of the battle. Photographer Bob Ianson recalls that they were just crossing the walking out when he suddenly saw a seal popping out of water with something wrapped around it and quickly grabbed his camera to capture the creature.

To his surprise, there were actually two creatures, one was the harbor seal while the other one was a giant octopus wrapped around the seals body.

The giant pacific octopus wrapped its tentacles around the seal and took it underwater, while the seal desperately tried to get a hold of it using it sharp teeth.

Moments later the seal emerged victorious while holding it's priced possession in its mouth and looking at the onlookers displaying its hunt and power as it went back home to enjoy its delicious meal. The epic battle between the seal and the octopus lasted for about 10 minutes with three back to back underwater battles.

From the photos captured it was estimated that the seal was somewhere between four to five feet long while it's weight was still unknown when compared to full grown weight of 50 pounds with the largest one recorded so far was at 600 pounds with an incredible length of 30 feet.

While the epic battle between the seal and the octopus was quite one sided in the footage as described by witnesses the marine biologists debate that it was quite rare for a seal to go for octopus as big as the one shown in pictures as they usually prefer smaller octopuses on their dinning menu.

Vancouver Aquarium research biologist Chad Nordstrom stated that octopus is a regular part of a harbor seal’s diet and that such encounters are actually normal but what was rare was capturing the incredible battle on a camera and appreciated Ianson's rare capture to which Ianson responded that it was lucky for him as a photographer to capture the scene while being at the right place at right time.

Talking of rare encounters captured on camera Ianson wasn't the first one to capture the epic battle between the octopus and seal but back in 2012 a tourist captured the similar encounter at the Ogden point which you can see in the video above.

In recent times the trend of marine animals targeting bigger and stronger animals has become familiar like for example this giant grouper eating a 4 feet shark in one bite or strange behavior shown by animals like this Hippo helping a crocodile kill a wildebeest.
